The food additive MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) is a slow poison. MSG hides behind 25 or more names, such as “Natural Flavouring.” MSG is even in your favourite coffee from Tim Horton’s and Starbucks coffee shops!

I wondered if there could be an actual chemical causing the massive obesity epidemic, and so did a friend of mine, John Erb. He was a research assistant at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada and spent years working for the government. He made a remarkable discovery while going through scientific journals for a book he was writing called ‘The Slow Poisoning of America.’

In hundreds of studies around the world, scientists were creating obese mice and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies. No strain of rat or mice is naturally obese, so scientists have to create them. They make these creatures morbidly obese by injecting them with MSG when they are first born.

The MSG triples the amount of insulin that the pancreas normally creates, causing rats (and perhaps humans) to become obese. They even have a name for the fat rodents they create: “MSG-Treated Rats.”

When I heard this, I was bewildered, leading me to head into my kitchen to check the cupboards and the refrigerator. MSG was in everything -- the Campbell’s soup cans, the Hostess Doritos, the Lays flavoured potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Gloria Swanson frozen prepared meals, and Kraft branded salad dressings, particularly the so-called “healthy low-fat” ones.

The items that didn’t have MSG marked on the product labels had something called “Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein,” which is just another name for Monosodium Glutamate.

For those of us not accustomed to all these, it was a shock to see the myriad foods we feed our children everyday that are filled with this stuff. Frighteningly MSG is hidden under many different names in order to fool those who read the ingredient lists, so that they don’t catch on. Other names to watch out for that is also MSG are “Accent,” “Ajinomoto,” “Natural Meat Tenderiser,” etc.

But it doesn’t stop there.

When our family went out to eat, we started asking at the restaurants what menu items contained MSG. Many employees, even the managers, swore they didn’t use MSG. But when we ask for the ingredient list, which they grudgingly provided, sure enough, MSG and Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein were everywhere.

Burger King, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, every restaurant -- even the sit-down eateries like TGIF, Chili’s, Applebee’s, and Denny’s -- use MSG in amazing abundance. KFC – formerly known as Kentucky Fried Chicken – seemed to be the WORST offender: MSG was in every chicken dish, salad dressing and sauce. No wonder I loved to eat that coating on the skin -- their secret spice was MSG!

So why is MSG in so many of the foods we eat? Is it a preservative or a vitamin or an innocuous flavour enhancer?

Not according to my friend John Erb. In his book ‘The Slow Poisoning of America,’ he said that MSG is added to food for the addictive effect it has on the human body.

Even the propaganda website sponsored by the food manufacturers’ lobby group supporting MSG explains that the reason they add it to food is to make people eat more.

A study of the elderly showed that older people eat more of the foods that it is added to. The Glutamate Association lobbying group says eating more is a benefit to the elderly, but what does it do to the rest of us?

“Betcha can’t eat [just] one,” takes on a whole new meaning where MSG is concerned! And we wonder why the nation is overweight!
MSG manufacturers themselves admit that it addicts people to their products. It makes people choose their product over others, and makes people eat more of it than they would if MSG wasn’t added.

Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, it is an addictive substance. Since its introduction into the American food supply fifty years ago, MSG has been added in increasingly larger doses to the pre-packaged meals, soups, snacks and fast foods we are tempted to eat everyday.

The FDA has set no limits on how much of it can be added to food. They claim it’s safe to eat in any amount. But how can they claim it’s safe when there are hundreds of scientific studies with titles like the following:

“The monosodium glutamate (MSG) obese rat as a model for the study of exercise in obesity.” – Gobatto CA, Mello MA, Souza CT, Ribeiro IA. Res Commun Mol Pathol Pharmacol. 2002.

“Adrenalectomy abolishes the food-induced hypothalamic serotonin release in both normal and monosodium glutamate-obese rats.” – Guimaraes RB, Telles MM, Coelho VB, Mori C, Nascimento CM, Ribeiro. Brain Res Bull. 2002 Aug.

“Obesity induced by neonatal monosodium glutamate treatment in spontaneously hypertensive rats: An animal model of multiple risk factors.” – Iwase M, Yamamoto M, Iino K, Ichikawa K, Shinohara N, Yoshinari Fujishima. Hypertens Res. 1998 Mar.

“Hypothalamic lesion induced by injection of monosodium glutamate in suckling period and subsequent development of obesity.” – Tanaka K, Shimada M, Nakao K Kusunoki. Exp Neurol. 1978 Oct.

No, the date of that last study was not a typo; it was published in 1978. Both the “medical research community” and “food manufacturers” have known about the side effects of MSG for decades.

Many more of the studies mentioned in John Erb’s book link MSG to diabetes, migraines and headaches, autism, ADHD, and even Alzheimer’s.

So what can we do to stop the food manufactures from dumping this fattening and addictive MSG into our food supply and causing the obesity epidemic we now see?

Several months ago, John Erb took his book and his concerns to one of the highest government health officials in Canada. While he was sitting in the government office, the official told him, “Sure, I know how bad MSG is. I wouldn’t touch the stuff.” But this top-level government official refuses to tell the public what he knows.

The big media doesn’t want to tell the public either, fearing issues with their advertisers. It seems that the fallout on the fast food industry may hurt their profit margin. The food producers and restaurants have been addicting us to their products for years, and now we are paying the price for it.

Our children should not be cursed with obesity caused by an addictive food additive.

But what can I do about it? I’m just one voice! What can I do to stop the poisoning of our children, while our governments are insuring financial protection for the industry that is poisoning us?

This message is going out to everyone I know in an attempt to tell you the truth that the corporate-owned politicians and media won’t tell you.

The best way you can help to save yourself and your children from this drug-induced epidemic is to forward this article to everyone. With any luck, it will circle the globe before politicians can pass the legislation protecting those who are poisoning us.

The food industry learned a lot from the tobacco industry. Imagine if big tobacco had a bill like this in place before someone blew the whistle on nicotine?

We the public do not want to be rats in one giant experiment and we do not approve of food that makes us into a nation of obese, lethargic, addicted sheep, feeding the food industry’s bottom line while waiting for the heart transplant, the diabetic-induced amputation, blindness, or other obesity-induced, life-threatening disorders.

With your help we can put an end to this poison. Do your part in sending this message out by word of mouth, email, or by distribution of this printout to your friends all over the world and stop this “Slow Poisoning of Mankind” by the packaged food industry.

The Laws of Negotiating are closely related to economics. They are part and parcel of the same process. Both economics and negotiating are based on the fact that each person places different values on different things. Everyone behaves economically in the sense that they always strive to negotiate the very best situation or result for themselves in each situation.

The Universal Law of Negotiating

Everything is negotiable. All prices and terms are set by someone. They can therefore be changed by someone. Prices are a best-guess estimate of what the customer will pay. The cost of manufacturing and marketing a particular product or service often has very little to do with the price that is put on it. Don't be intimidated by written prices, assume that they are written in pencil and can be easily erased and replaced with something more favorable to you. The key is to ask.

The Law of Futurity

The purpose of negotiation is to enter into an agreement such that both parties have their needs satisfied and are motivated to fulfill their agreements and enter into further negotiations with the same party in the future.

The Law of Win-Win or No Deal

In a successful negotiation, both parties should be fully satisfied with the result and feel that they have each "won" or no deal should be made at all. When you are determined to achieve a win-win solution to a negotiation, and you are open, receptive, and flexible in your discussions, you will often discover a third alternative that neither party had considered initially but that is superior to what either of you might have though of on your own.

The Law of Unlimited Possibilities

You can always get a better deal if you know how. You never need to settle for less or feel dissatisfied with the result of any negotiation. If you want a better deal, ask for it. You will be quite astonished at the better deals you will get by simply asking for a lower price if you're buying and asking for a higher price if you're selling.

The Law of Timing

Timing is everything in a negotiation. Whenever possible, you must plan strategically and use the timing of the negotiation to your advantage. If you are in a hurry to close a deal, your ability to negotiate well on your own behalf diminishes dramatically. The person who allows himself or herself to be rushed will bet the worst bargain. You resolve 80 percent of the vital issues of any negotiation in the last 20 percent of the time allocated for the negotiation.

The Law of Terms

The terms of payment can be more important than the price in a negotiation. You can agree to almost any price if you can decide the terms. It is important to never accept the first offer no matter how good it sounds. Act a little disappointed when you hear the first offer, and then ask for time to think about it. Realize that no matter how good the first offer is, it usually means that you can get an even better deal if you are patient.

Action Exercise

Whenever possible, talk to someone who has negotiated the same sort of deal with the same person. Find out what the other person is likely to want and what he or she has agreed to in the past. Forewarned is forearmed!

One day an expert In time management was speaking to a group of business students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration those students will never forget.

As he stood in front of the group of high powered overachievers he said, “Okay, time for a quiz”. Then he pulled out a one-gallon wide mouth jar and set it on the table in front of him. He then produced about a dozen fist sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, “Is this jar full”? Every one in the class said, “Yes”. The expert said “really”

He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. Then he dumped some gravel in and shook the jar causing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the space between the big rocks. He asked the group once more, “is the jar full?” By this time the class was on him. “probably not”. One of them answered.

“Good” he replied. HE reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in the Jar and it went into all of the spaces left between the rocks & and the gravel. Once more he asked the Question, “Is this jar full?’. “No!” the class shouted. Once again he said “good”.

Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and asked “What is the point of this illustration”? One eager beaver raised his hand and said, “The point is, no matter how full schedule is, if you try really hard you can always fit some more things in it”.

“No”, the speaker replied, “that’s not the point. The truth this illustration teaches us is: If you don’t put the big rocks in first, you’ll never get them in at all.”

What are the “Big Rocks” in your life?. Your children…. Your Loved ones….. Education….. Your dreams….. A worthy cause… Teaching or mentoring others….. Doing things that you love…. Time for your self….. Your health ……. Your significant other….

Remember to put these BIG ROCKS in first or you’all never get them in at all. If you sweat the little stuff (the gravel, the sand) then you’all fill your life with little things you worry about that don’t really matter, and you’all never have the real quality time you need to spend on the big important stuff (the big rocks)

Ask your self this question : ‘What are the ‘big rocks’ in my life? Then, put those in your jar first.

5 Keys to Successful Seminar Promotion - By Jenny Hamby

You've booked a hotel meeting room and picked a seminar topic. Then it hits you: You have a lot of money on the line ... and no idea how to fill the seminar seats. Use these five tips to get started on the path of successful seminar promotion.

1. Target your best prospects.
The world is a big place, and you probably can't afford to reach everyone who could benefit from your seminar even once, much less multiple times.

To maximize your investment of time, money and creativity, identify the prospects who are most likely to benefit from -- and pay to attend -- your seminar. If you want to promote your event to several audiences, that's fine. Just be sure to invest the most attention marketing to your ideal prospects.

You may find that your event offers dozens of benefits to a wide variety of people. In this case, identifying your ideal prospects can make it easier to craft your message. Rather than trying to be everything to everyone, create promotional materials that speak to your ideal prospects. For example, your personal growth seminar could, technically, benefit every person you meet. But you might find that women over age 50 are your best candidates; address their needs, desires and concerns in your marketing materials.

2. Identify what your prospects are seeking.
Then make sure that your marketing message matches what they want. The better you're able to match your seminar content and description to what prospects want, the better your chances of filling seats.

You may find that your seminar is something that prospects should want; as the expert, you know that it delivers the ideal solution. Unfortunately, your prospects aren't aware that your training is what they want or need. They simply don't know what they don't know. Telling prospects about the core benefits of your event won't resonate, because they are actively looking for a different, perhaps secondary, benefit.

In this case, you need to meet prospects where they are and then show them why your seminar is the solution with the greatest potential. Figure out what frustrations your audience is having, what worries keep them up at night, and what goals they are pursuing. Use these concepts to create a powerful headline and introduction that captures their attention. Then use the rest of your sales letter or promotional message to show prospects how your seminar will help them -- and why they should register.

For example, let's say that your seminar will help participants heal emotional wounds from childhood. That promise would appeal to people who recognize that they have old emotional wounds and are actively seeking a way to heal. But people who don't have the awareness or desire to heal the past will be oblivious to your message.

One of the primary benefits of your training might be that by healing your old emotional wounds, you're able to become a better parent. If parents are one of your ideal groups of prospects, you could develop a marketing campaign around one of their top problems or their goal of becoming a better parent. By incorporating into your promotions the promise that they'll be able to better parent their children after participating in your seminar, you'll be able to more easily capture this group's attention and convince them that your event is relevant.

3. Contact prospects multiple times ... and in multiple ways.
Your prospects are bombarded with thousands of promotional messages each day. To stand out enough to attract attention and generate registrations, you can't make the mistake of sending out a promotion or two. Many promoters have done so in the past ... and then been puzzled and terribly disappointed when registrations numbers were low.

Instead, contact your prospects multiple times, including right up until your event. Also, use a variety of marketing tools. Although it's easy to rely on one type of promotion, such as email marketing, incorporating multiple media improves your chances of connecting with any particular individual.

For example, some prospects rarely read promotional emails. If you're using email blasts to fill your seminars, they will be ignored by this segment of your audience -- no matter how well they are written. Sending a direct mail letter or postcard allows you to reach out and touch email-avoiding prospects. As an added bonus, fewer promoters use direct mail, because it is more costly and complex to incorporate into your marketing mix. By using it, you'll stand out -- there is less competition in the mailbox than in the inbox.

4. Use enough marketing copy to make the sale.
One of the most common mistakes speakers, trainers and coaches make is to use marketing copy that is too brief and generalized. They think that the copy gives an accurate and clear description of what the event will deliver; however, they're too close to the material to see that the description isn't adequate. As a result, the message doesn't connect with the audience, and registration numbers stay low.

The most critical and often overlooked sections of copy include what you'll learn, who should attend, and how you'll benefit. The more detailed these sections are, the more compelling your copy will be. Prospects will be able to rapidly recognize their need for your program. And they'll quickly recognize that your seminar will be a smart investment of their time and money.

If you're writing your own marketing copy, be sure to have at least a few other people review your work. Ideally, you'll get input from members of your target audience. At the very least, request feedback from people who aren't familiar with your event. Ask for their honest input about where they get confused or disinterested, as well as what remaining questions or objections would prevent them from signing up.

5. Ask for help promoting your seminar.
The best source of prospective attendees for your seminars is your own database. But if your mailing list is small, your seminar marketing results will be limited. At some point, marketing becomes a numbers game; you have to reach more people to see the registration numbers you want.

One of the best ways to reach more people is to enlist the help of other companies or individuals. Seek out colleagues who already have relationships with your target audience, and ask them to be your affiliate. Offer them a commission for every person from their database who registers for your event. Or, if they are unable or unwilling to accept a commission, offer their subscribers a discount or an added bonus as incentive to help promote your event.

For the greatest impact with affiliate marketing, be prepared to give your affiliates the marketing materials they need to promote your event. Examples include email copy, banner ads, an online sales letter and an article to be included in their newsletter or posted to their blog. Also suggest a promotional schedule for your affiliates to follow, and follow up regularly to ensure that they are promoting your event as promised.

Promoting your own seminars and workshops can be a risky and nerve-wracking adventure, but also one that is profoundly rewarding. You could have a hundred marketing strategies lined up for the coming year, but if you apply them to the wrong pricing model you could end up very disappointed. You might still do OK but it's unlikely the result will be brilliant.

There are three elements to consider when deciding on a pricing strategy:

1. Don't fear pricing -- One of the worse things you can do when a customer queries a price is to start backing down or apologizing for it. Once you have decided on a price, being strong to stand by that decision will communicate confidence in your product or service.

Beware employees who believe your prices are too expensive. Their attitude will definitely influence your customers. Some may even say such things like "I know it's a bit expensive, but..." This is an absolute no, no! Usually, some simple training in presentation and why they should be proud of your prices is all that's needed to put this right.

When you and your employees take a pride in your pricing structure and start believing it's well deserved, it will start to influence your customers in all sorts of ways. Prospects will be attracted to that kind of certainty. Customers will be satisfied that they are getting real value for money.

2. Look beyond a customer's price query -- When a customer tells you a product or service is too expensive, don't believe it. Even if they do think the price is a bit high, it is more likely than not that there is another reason why they aren't buying.

Much research has gone into this subject and shows that price is often used as an excuse to get out of making a purchase, when really it is more likely that the customer simply hasn't understood the offer. If this happens you need to consider that you may not have explained what it is you're selling well enough.

We know from consumers' past buying history that affordability, and therefore price, isn't the biggest influencer when it comes to buying decisions. The huge credit card industry stands testimony to the certainty that people will buy what they cannot afford.

Of course, there is a portion of the market that only buys on price. What portion of your business is influenced by this type of customer will depend on the business you're in. If 10 - 20% of your customers always want the cheapest available, you have to ask yourself if you really want them as customers. Personally, I'd steer well clear of them.

If you find such customers make up your core business, you need to think about re-structuring right away. These types of customers are always the hardest to deal with and will give you the least profit. You will end up paying them to use your services!

When someone challenges a price you need to go deeper. Have they understood your offer? Have you met their needs? Reinforce the benefits. When someone says no because the price is too high, they usually mean they cannot see the value.

3. Premium Pricing -- Selling expensive items to people for whom price is not an issue is one of the keys to entrepreneurial wealth. The fashion and motor industries are obvious examples. High end brands will keep their prices deliberately high so that only the wealthy can afford them.

We could break the figures down like this:

10 - 20% buy on price alone.

80 - 85% take price into account, but it's not the most crucial factor.

5 - 10% want the very best and are willing to pay any price to get it. More than that, they usually make their buying decisions based on what's the most expensive. They have a belief system that's grown out of a social conditioning that says -- expensive is best.

You are certain to come into contact with this 5 - 10% group at some stage. Are you ready to give them what they want? It is very likely that 5% of your present customer list would be willing to purchase something from you, right now, that's five times the price of your most expensive item!

Find a way to give your customers a choice. Perhaps you can re-structure your services or product range into Platinum, Gold and Silver or Deluxe, Standard, Economy. 1,000 customers will buy at $100 each, 50 (5% of 1,000) at $500 and 2-3 (5% of 50) at $2,500.

Statistics indicate that you are probably not charging enough for whatever it is you're selling anyway. Plan to structure your business to move towards that 5 - 10% of the population. Generally, these people are easier to target, better to do business with and will make a greater difference to the success of your business.

Oddly, the ultimate goal of self-employment might be to work yourself out of a job.

Many people start businesses simply to create jobs for themselves. Self-employment offers many benefits, not the least of which is the opportunity to develop basic business trade skills, while getting paid for work you love to do. Self-employment is everything some owners want, while others use it as a stepping stone to build sustainable, stand-alone businesses.

What's the difference between self-employment and being in business? Here are some signs that you are self-employed.

You are the business. When customers think of your business they think of you, and they usually count on you to be one delivering the goods.

You might be tied to a roller coaster, feast and famine schedule. You work long hours while contracts last and you're unemployed when they end. You are at the beck and call of your customers and dare not turn down any jobs because you never know when they might stop coming in.

Your paycheck is tied to the amount of hours you personally spend serving customers. When you stop, the revenue stops; when you get tired the business stops.

You spend all or most of your time working in the business, with no energy left over to work on the business.

You likely don't have financial systems in place, probably do your own bookkeeping, and treat your accountant to the occasional shoebox bulging with receipts. You fly by the seat of your pants for the entire year before finding out if you've earned a profit.

Here are a few indicators that a business owner is moving beyond self-employment and on to building a business.

The business is separate from the owner. Customers don't necessarily expect the owner to be on the front line. The business takes on more of a team approach, involving people who share the owner's vision, mission and values.

The team will necessitate human resource responsibilities, systems and processes. Jobs have written descriptions and are staffed by the right people, instead of the other way around. The owner's job shifts from the front line to leading the team.

Although the owner will probably still work a considerable number of hours, his paycheck is not limited to the number of billable hours worked.

While the owner might still choose to work in the business, more time is invested in designing systems for efficiency and growth.

The business has proper accounting and financial controls, with regular monthly financial statements and methods for tracking the flow of all monies in and out of the business.

The transition from self-employment to business doesn't happen by accident. It is brought about when the owner consciously decides to invest in building the systems that form the backbone of the business. Once the infrastructure is in place the owner will be positioned to reduce her work hours, or possibly even sell the business and move on to other pursuits.
